A man who pleaded guilty to attempting to shoot a New Westminster police officer in 2015 has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Steven Gordon Vollrath, 37, who also received a 12-year sentence in Alberta on other charges, will now remain in custody for 17 years.

New Westminster Police Department officers responded to a May 2015 report of a male and female sleeping in a car in the 100 block of Royal Avenue. Officers spoke with the two in the vehicle and returned to their police cruiser to check the information on the police database. Upon returning to speak again with the two in the vehicle, the man pointed a handgun at one of the officers and pulled the trigger.

“This is a clear case of how quickly circumstances can change in policing, and thankfully the gun did not fire after Mr. Vollrath pulled the trigger at the officer,” said Sgt. Jeff Scott.

Vollrath then fled in his vehicle. Several weeks later, Vollrath was arrested in Canmore, Alta.
