A basic Cree and Ojibway language class is being offered by the Pacific Association of First Nations Women.
In a prepared statement, the association’s language program coordinator Jessica Couzelis said this would be the first intake of the two-month program.
“We are excited to begin another cohort of community, culture and connection with valuable members of our growing Cree and Ojibway language learning community,” Couzelis wrote.
The program is being funded by the B.C. Language Initiative Program and the Aboriginal Languages Initiative, through the First Peoples Cultural Council.
The First People’s Cultural Council is a provincial Crown corporation created in 1990 to administer the B.C. government’s First Peoples’ Heritage, Language and Cultural Program.
The 10-week program is open to applicants of Cree and Ojibway and starts this Thursday, although late entrants are welcome. It is being held at the Native Education College, 237 E 5th Ave, Vancouver.
Couzelis said the association is also offering drop-in language circles and cultural language learning events.
In 2018, the B.C. Ministry of Advanced Education approved a degree at UBC for the First Nations and Endangered Languages Program. The program’s first cohort will graduate this spring.
