UNDER the BS Interior Design Program of the University of the Philippines, the senior students undergo their capstone course, ID 179: Special Project in Interior Design. The graduating batch takes the subject apart from their thesis in line with the university’s virtue of service-learning. In ID 179, the students are supervised by their licensed interior designer professor to execute the class’ project for a beneficiary that they have collectively chosen.
This year, the project is entitled “Project Kalinga: Nurturing Spaces for the Future,” for the benefit of UP Diliman’s Kalinga Day Care Center. Shortened as KDCC, the daycare is popularly known as the “Pink House in Area 1.” The alternative learning institution is nonformal and nonstructured that caters to children aged 1.6 to 5.5 years old. Supervised by the UP Center for Women’s and Gender Studies, KDCC aims to meet the developmental needs of children in a gender-fair and peaceful environment as well as promote positive self-concept in children.
UP BSID’s class of 2020 is comprised of 10 individuals who worked on Project Kalinga. The project’s advocacy for this year is to promote holistic development in children through promoting, encouraging and nurturing environments. They believe that it is necessary to highlight the attention given to this age since this is where children’s cognitive and social aspects begin to develop. They also saw choosing KDCC as a means of giving back to the university in which they stayed.
