A 28-year-old man has become the latest victim of the on-going Lower Mainland gang conflict.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team’s Sgt. Frank Jang identified Julian Johnson as the victim of a fatal shooting in Burnaby Sunday evening.

Jang said Burnaby RCMP responded to reports of a shooting at the Chevron gas station at 4487 Canada Way about 6:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found Johnson, injured with gunshot wounds.

“He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  A black Nissan Rogue was identified as a suspect vehicle from the gas station and was last seen eastbound on Highway 1,” Jang said. “Later in the evening, the Langley RCMP received a call of a vehicle fire in the area of 206A Street and 73B Avenue.  The burnt vehicle is believed to be the Nissan Rogue from the earlier shooting in Burnaby. ”

He said IHIT is working closely with the Burnaby RCMP, the Langley RCMP, the Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the B.C. Coroners Service to gather evidence.

He said investigators are looking for dash cam video from anyone who was travelling in the following locations and time periods:

“Julian Johnson was known to police and his homicide is believed to be a targeted incident that is linked to the ongoing Lower Mainland gang conflict,” Jang said. “This was a brazen shooting in a public place and we are relieved no one else was hurt.”

He said “significant progress is being made in these early stages.  Our investigators are pursuing several leads and we need everyone with information to contact us so we can maintain the momentum on this fast-moving investigation.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551- 4448 or ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

It was a violent weekend on the Lower Mainland.

Vancouver Police are investigating two murders – a fatal shooting of a man discovered in an underground parking lot Saturday night about 8:30 and the slaying of a woman in her suite in Gastown.

So far in 2020, there have been three murders in Vancouver and another three in IHIT’s jurisdiction.

And IHIT announced that there was a suspicious death in Maple Ridge on Jan. 12 when a body was found in the 24500-block of Lougheed Hwy. No name has been released or anyone arrested in that death either.

One man was charged after the Jan. 2 murder of Jason Stanley Wells, 39, in the parking lot of a strip mall at 75A Avenue and Scott Road in Surrey.

Michael James Petronio, 33, faces one count of second-degee murder.

Police said earlier that Wells died after an altercation between the two men.
