THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has observed a downtrend in Taal Volcano’s activity on Sunday but maintained Alert Level 4 over Taal Volcano as a major eruption is still possible.

Based on Phivolcs’ 24-hour observation period, 25 volcanic earthquakes have been plotted with a magnitude range of 1.3 up to 2.7 as of 5 a.m. One “felt” event was registered at Intensity 1.

Out of the 787 volcanic earthquakes, 15 low-frequency tremors had been recorded.

This was lower compared to the previous day with a total of 32 volcanic earthquakes that have been plotted with a magnitude range of 1.5 up to 3.3. A total of 876 volcanic earthquakes that included six tremor events and 20 low-frequency earthquakes, had been previously recorded.

“Such intense seismic activity likely signifies continuous magmatic intrusion beneath the Taal edifice, which may lead to further eruptive activity,” the bulletin read.

Despite the downtrend in volcanic activities, Phivolcs Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division Chief Mariton Bornas said a major explosion was not discounted because of the continuous low frequency that indicated movement of magma. DIVINA NOVA JOY DELA CRUZ
