Most Canadian’s aren’t clocking enough sleep, according to a new poll released Tuesday.
Health Canada recommends snoozing between seven and nine hours each night but a poll conducted by Research Co. found that only 35 per cent of Canadians report being able to match that guideline on weekdays or work days. That figure increases to 45 per cent on a weekend or non-work day.
The online survey, which asked a representative sample of 1,000 Canadians to share their sleep habits, also found that worrying about money and relationships were among the top reasons that kept Canadians up at night. A total of 49 per cent of respondents said money took over their mind at bedtime, while 32 percent were distracted by relationships or family.
“Albertans (62 per cent) are significantly more likely to say that they were kept awake by financial concerns than residents of all other regions,” said Mario Canseco, president of Research Co.
“Women are also more likely to have lost sleep because of financial matters than men (54 per cent to 43 per cent).”
Within B.C., a total of 46 per cent say they average six to seven hours of sleep on weeknights, with 56 per cent saying they felt “moderately well rested” any given day of the week.
The survey was conducted online between Dec. 18 to 20, 2019 and sought feedback from 1,000 Canadian adults from across the country.
