Oscar’s golden light reached Hollywood North on Monday, with a number of Vancouver film workers receiving nods as Academy Awards nominations were revealed in Los Angeles.
Vancouver-born production designer Dennis Gassner, who won an Oscar in 1992 for Bugsy, earned his seventh best production design nomination for his work on director Sam Mendes’ British war epic 1917.
Gassner, who was last nominated in 2018 for Blade Runner 2049, shares the nomination with set decorator Lee Sandales.
Vancouver artist Trevor Dalmer, although not directly nominated, is part of the talented crew behind Missing Link, nominated for best animated film.
Dalmer served as concept artist on the Golden Globe-winning stop animation film about a Sasquatch who travels to Shangri-La in the Himalayas to meet his yeti the yeti cousins.
Dalmer is also nominated for an Annie Award, presented by International Animated Film Association, for Missing Link. He won an Annie Award in 2016 for his work on the acclaimed Kubo and the Two Strings.
Meanwhile, Bron Studios, the Vancouver production company headed by husband and wife Aaron and Brenda Gilbert, should prepare for a generous haul of statuettes on Oscar night, Feb. 9, after receiving a total of 14 nomination for two of its films — Joker and Bombshell.
Joker, which was partially financed by Bron, earned 11 nods including best picture, director Todd Phillips and actor Joaquin Phoenix. The controversial Warner Bros. movie, an origin story of the titular D.C. Comics villain, earned more than $1 billion at the global box office.
Bombshell, a biographical account of the sexual harassment allegations levelled against the late Fox News CEO Roger Ailes, is up for three awards — including a best actress nod for Charlize Theron and best-supporting actress nomination for Margot Robbie.
