Emergency crews are on the scene of a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 17 near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal.
Delta police say one person was “seriously injured” in the head-on collision near Tsatsu Shores Drive at the beginning of the Tsawwassen causeway.
B.C. Emergency Health Services, which received a call at 8:20 a.m., say the incident involved two vehicles, including a two truck towing a car.
BCEHS spokeswoman Shannon Miller says one person was airlifted to hospital where they are listed in critical condition, while another person was transported in stable condition by ambulance.
Traffic has been reduced to one lane alternating traffic, while the causeway leading to the terminal has been closed to traffic.
The accident is delaying ferry service, with the 7 a.m. sailing of the Spirit of Vancouver Island, which runs between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island, being held in dock while emergency crews tend to the accident scene.
B.C. Ferries says passengers will not be off loaded until the road clears.
“Until the causeway is clear, we will be holding arrivals on board until given the all clear by emergency crews. Customers travelling to and from Tsawwassen are being advised that they may experience a delay in accessing or leaving the terminal. Updates will be provided when available,” B.C. Ferries said in a statement.
