Keep your shovels handy, Metro Vancouver. The region is in for a week of snowy, freezing weather.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting either a chance of snow or snow every day from Monday to Friday. Along with the snow will be colder than normal temperatures, with the mercury forecast to dip as low as – 11 C.

On Saturday, the federal weather agency posted a snowfall warning, saying there could be another five to 15 centimetres of snow by Sunday afternoon.

Higher elevations such as West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Port Moody, and Coquitlam will see the most snow, while Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster will see wet snow mixed with rain.

Richmond, Delta, Tsawwassen and Ladner are also more likely to see mostly rain on Saturday night, but that is going to change this week.

There’s a chance of snow flurries on Monday and Tuesday, with temperature highs of – 2 C and – 4 C, and overnight lows of – 11 C and – 8 C, respectively.

Then, on Wednesday, the agency is forecasting a chance of snow during the day, with a high of – 3 C and periods of snow overnight, with a low of – 5 C.

On Thursday, it’s expected to snow all day and night and continue on Friday, with highs between 1 C and – 4 C.

The Vancouver Sun and The Province will provide ongoing updates on the cold snap, and post are school closures that may occur.

Meantime, a wind warning was also in effect for the region on Saturday. The agency says wind gusts of 90 km/h nearer the water and up to 70 km/h inland are expected during the morning. The wind should ease by Saturday afternoon.

The agency warns that loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.
