Royal couple to move to B.C.?

News flash: People like B.C.
The latest international jet-setters who appear to have fallen for our province’s charms are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who spent Christmas on Vancouver Island.
After a few lovely walks and a bit of peace and tranquillity, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, shocked the world by announcing they were stepping back from their “Royal duties” and looking to “balance” their time between the U.K. and North America.
The British tabloids that seem to have driven them across the Atlantic are calling it Megxit. It’s such a big deal in England that it was on the front page of every tabloid newspaper Thursday, and even on the cover of “respectable” broadsheets like The Times and Daily Telegraph.
The funniest cover wasn’t in London, England, though. The New York Post also went with Megxit, with the kicker, “Meghan and Harry leave royals for ‘commoner’ life.” The illustration features Harry and Meghan watching the telly in their undies, swilling Pabst Blue Ribbon beer. A vintage Canadian Pacific travel poster of a moose hangs in the background.
Now I’ve been tasked with convincing the Royal couple to move to Vancouver. By my editors, not John Horgan nor Kennedy Stewart.
So here goes:
The choice seems to be whether to live in Canada or Los Angeles. Meghan lived in Toronto for several years while she was acting in the TV series Suits, so she’s obviously pretty comfortable there. And L.A.’s L.A — sunny, beautiful and brimming with great Mexican food.
But they’re trying to flee the tabs and live a more low-key life. That’s not going to happen in Toronto or L.A.
On the other hand, you’ve got Vancouver, where the masses tend to leave celebrities alone. And, with our booming film industry, Meghan should find it easy to pick up work — they’re always making TV movies here for the Hallmark Channel. Harry’s pretty dashing, he could probably pick up some Hallmark work as well.
L.A. is also a relatively short flight from here, should the couple want to visit her mom.
As for Toronto, well, it’s pretty chilly there in the winter, and sweltering in the summer. If they want snow, Whistler’s a short drive from Vancouver. The skiing’s better too.
Vancouver’s temperate, relatively warm in the winter and relatively cool in the summer. Sort of like London, only better. If the rain gets too much, they can always hop on a plane for a quick escape to Palm Springs or Honolulu. After all, it’s a Vancouver tradition.
Vancouver’s got mountains, the ocean, clean air, big trees, giant parks, fresh food, great restaurants and a cosmopolitan vibe. Their son Archie could grow up as a badass mountain biker or snowboarder on the North Shore.
The premier gripe of locals is the housing prices, but that probably wouldn’t be a problem for Harry and Meghan. There’s a beautiful 7,000-square-foot waterfront house at 3019 Point Grey Rd. for sale for $35,880,000, and they’d probably knock the price down a couple of million dollars. It’s even on that part of the road where they cut off traffic, making it like a gated community.
Perfect.
