An independent B.C. police watchdog is in Salmon Arm after a man was shot and killed during an attempted arrest on Tuesday.
According to the B.C. RCMP, police were called around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday in the community of Tappen, where a resident reported someone had severely damaged their property.
Police then identified a male suspect at a neighbouring home but an attempted arrest was called off for safety reasons. An emergency response team was called in to assist and a warrant for the home was issued.
Officers then used a chemical agent in an attempt to force the man from the home; when the man left, he attempted to flee.
“In the resulting interaction between a police officer and the man, he was shot,” read the RCMP statement. “The male died and no one else was injured during the incident.”
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating the fatal shooting. No further information will be released at this time.
The IIOBC is responsible for probing cases involving death or injury involving police.
