Surrey police are warning people of a new scam that offers discounts airfares to India via WhatsApp.

According to Surrey RCMP, in recent weeks at least two separate victims reported having their credit card information stolen after trying to book what they believed were low-cost airline tickets via messaging application WhatsApp.

In both cases, the victims saw advertising on Punjabi television and newspapers offering low-cost flights between Vancouver and India. Interested individuals were then directed to share personal and credit card information via WhatsApp to make the booking.

“These incidents are actively being investigated and police are currently looking to identify the individuals involved,” said Cpl. Dan Klassen.

“This is a new trend of note and we are bringing the details to light so that the public are aware of the scam and can take steps to protect themselves.”

Police are reminding the public to never share person or credit card information over smartphone apps to an unknown party. Travellers should always book their airline tickets through a secure booking website, licensed travel agent or directly with the airline.

Anyone with information about this scam or who believes they may have fallen victim to this scam is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
