Most Filipinos believe that there are “ninja cops” or police officers involved in drug recycling, according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released on Tuesday.

The nationwide poll, conducted from December 13 to 16 among 1,200 respondents, showed 78 percent of Filipino adults believe that there are ninja cops among members of the police force.

Meanwhile, 7 percent of the respondents do not believe the accusation, while 15 percent are undecided about the matter.

“This gives a net belief score (percent strongly/somewhat believe minus percent somewhat/strongly do not believe) of +70, correctly rounded,” the SWS said.

Net belief in the accusation that there are ninja cops in the police force is highest in Metro Manila at +77 (83 percent believe, 6 percent do not believe), followed by Balance Luzon at +71 (77 percent believe, 6 percent do not believe), the Visayas at +69 (77 percent believe, 8 percent do not believe) and Mindanao at +65 (75 percent believe, 10 percent do not believe).

The same survey also found that 50 percent of Filipinos believe that former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Oscar Albayalde is a protector of ninja cops, while 13 percent do not believe the accusation.

“This gives a net belief score of +37,” the polling firm said.

Net belief in the accusation that Albayalde is a protector of ninja cops is highest in the Visayas at +43 (56 percent believe, 13 percent do not believe), followed by Metro Manila at +40 (53 percent believe, 13 percent do not believe), Balance Luzon at +36 (48 percent believe, 11 percent do not believe, correctly rounded) and Mindanao at +33 (48 percent believe, 15 percent do not believe).

Albayalde resigned from his post weeks before his retirement on November 8 over allegations that he protected his men who were accused of selling seized illegal drugs.

The former PNP chief and 13 other police officers are facing charges of graft, qualified bribery, falsification of public documents, dereliction of duty and violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act in connection with the alleged questionable anti-drug raid in 2013.

Albayalde had denied the allegations and claimed that some retired generals were conspiring against him.

Meanwhile, the SWS found that 23 percent of Filipinos said there were “very many” ninja cops in the police force, while 44 percent said there are “somewhat many.”

The proportion of those who say there are many ninja cops among members of the police force is highest in Metro Manila at 79 percent, followed by Balance Luzon at 70 percent, the Visayas at 68 percent and Mindanao at 53 percent.

The fourth quarter SWS survey, conducted using face-to-face interviews, had sampling error margins of ±3 percent for national percentages and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.
