Why we love it: Initially introduced in 1914 as a print on an onyx-and-diamond ladies’ wristwatch, the panther — in seemingly infinite variations — has long been a symbol for the luxury French design house Cartier.
In 1948, tastemaker (and then Creative Director at Cartier) Jeanne Toussaint unveiled a “surprising” new take on the iconic animal image. Designed with bold, independent women in mind (the Duchess of Windsor and María Félix are said to have been fans) the reimagining saw the fierce feline in its full form crafted from yellow gold, emerald and black-enamel.
Since then, the panther has featured prominently throughout Cartier’s jewelry and timepiece creations.
For 2020, the company has unleashed a new collection of iterations and design extensions within the Panthère de Cartier collection. The new release sees the panther adorning a variety of pieces — from fine jewelry and watches to perfume.
While we can appreciate the full range of Panthère de Cartier offerings, we couldn’t help but pause to appreciate this Panthère de Cartier Figurative watch. The design, which is available to view by appointment, features a chic, open-cuff design crafted in 18-karat yellow gold with emeralds, black lacquer and diamonds.
