Vancouver residents hauled their Christmas trees, stripped of all baubles and tinsel, to the Lions Club charity chipping event on Saturday.
The event is being held at four locations around the city from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The Lions Club turns the wood chips into nutrient-rich compost, and expected thousands of trees to be chipped over the weekend.
There are four locations: Sunset Beach; Trout Lake Community Centre; Kerrisdale Community Ice Rink; And Kitsilano Beach.

The city is reminding holiday enthusiasts that whether they put the tree in the curb side compost collection or take it to the chipper, to make sure all plastic decorations and tinsel have been removed.
For curb side collection, trees will be collected the weekend of Jan. 11 and 12 from homes with City Green Bin service.
Christmas trees can also be dropped off for free until Jan. 31 at the Vancouver South Transfer Station located at 377 West Kent Avenue North or the Vancouver Landfill located at 5400 72nd Street in Delta.
While the city has several programs to deal with cut Christmas trees, they don’t have a program for those who bought a potted tree this year.
Some people are opting for a live, potted tree as a more environmental choice, but finding a place to replant it can be a problem, especially for those who live in apartments and townhouses.
Jonathan McDermott, the solid waste program branch manager for the city of Vancouver, said Saturday that while the city has previously not explored the option of a replanting program, it is something “we will certainly consider looking into future years.”
