3 of 41 passengers hurt after bus falls into ravine in Sorsogon town

LEGAZPI CITY — At least three of 41 passengers of a bus bound for Samar province were hurt after the vehicle fell into a 50-meter deep ravine on Monday (Dec. 30) in Matnog town, Sorsogon province, a police report said.

Maj. Maria Luisa Calubaquib, BicolĀ  police spokesperson, said passengersĀ Lita Nicanor Misa, 26 and resident of Capocan, Leyte; Nelsa Deloria, 34, resident of Bassey, Samar; and Nely Caberic, 52, also of Bassey, Samar, suffered minor injuries.

The Eagle Star Bus, driven by Felix Calipes, resident of Calbayog City, was overtaking another bus at a downhill curve of the Maharlika Highway at the village of Hidhid when Calipes lost control of the steering wheel, sending the bus down into the deep ravine.

Police investigators said the accident was caused by the driver’s failure to initiate preventive road safety measures.

The driver will be facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to government property.
