A man has died at a fish farm near Tofino.
In a statement released Monday, Cermaq Canada confirmed an employee died on Sunday at one of its fish farms off Vancouver Island’s west coast.
“Out of respect for the family of the employee who has passed, the employees involved, and the official follow-up process, we will not be providing any further details at this time,” the company said.
“We are extending our heartfelt condolences and support to the family and friends of our employee. We are providing resources and support for our employees and families as they work through this tragic and difficult time.”
Cermaq said the Canadian Coast Guard was contacted about the incident and the company is continuing to work with officials.
“As the investigation progresses, we will share what we can, when it is appropriate,” Cermaq said.
On the Cermaq Facebook page, the B.C. Centre for Aquatic Health sent condolences to all at Cermaq and their families.
“Our thoughts are with all of you today, Cermaq, and our condolences go out to the family, and to your team,” wrote Grieg Seafood B.C.
