The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has been called in after a man was shot by a police officer early Sunday morning.
In a prepared statement, the IIO said that around midnight an officer with the Kelowna-based Central Okanagan Traffic Services was involved in the pursuit of a man who had allegedly previously failed to stop for that officer.
The officer was able to stop the suspect on a dead end roadway near Highland Drive and Glenmore Road in Kelowna.
“An interaction occurred between the officer and the driver which led to shots being fired by police,” the statement read. “The driver continued but was later admitted to a local area hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening gunshot injuries. He has been arrested but remains in hospital.”
The Kelowna RCMP General Investigation Section is investigating the criminal code and driving offences, while the IIO is now investigating whether “police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s injuries.”
The IIO is a civilian-led police oversight agency responsible for conducting investigations into incidents of death or serious harm that may have been the result of the actions of a police officer, whether on or off duty.
