Dozens of skaters took advantage of free ice at the City of North Vancouver’s Shipyards Skate Plaza on Sunday afternoon.

The outdoor ice surface will be a water park in the summer and was part of the city’s revitalization plan for the waterfront, just south of the SeaBus terminal.

The facility is open from noon to 7 p.m. — but closed on Christmas Day — and features a retractable roof with views of the harbour and the Vancouver skyline.

It is the region’s largest outdoor skating rink at 12,000 square feet. Other local outdoor rinks include the Robson Square downtown rink, and the Grouse Mountain rink.

All the rinks will benefit from cold weather expected over the Christmas break, with a maximum of 5C tipped in Vancouver for Dec. 25, and colder in the Fraser Valley.
