A new low pressure area (LPA) entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday afternoon, the weather-state bureau said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the LPA was 860 kilometers east-southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

Weather expert Ana Claren said that the LPA was unlikely to intensify into a storm but it may bring heavy rains that could cause floods and landslides in the southern and central Philippines this coming weekend.

The weather-state bureau added that the LPA would also affect parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.

Another LPA is forecast to enter PAR by Tuesday (December 24), and was expected to intensify into a storm.

Cagayan, Isabela and Aurora will have cloudy skies with isolated rains and thunderstorms, the weather-state bureau said on Friday.

Pagasa said the rest of the country would have fair weather, except for localized thunderstorms.
