Winter Celebrations

When: until Jan. 5 (closed Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1)

Where: Anvil Centre, 777 Columbia St., New Westminster

Tickets: free except for It’s a Wonderful Life (from $29/visit anvilcentre.com)

1. It’s a Wonderful Life. Patrick Street Productions remounts artistic director Peter Jorgensen’s musical adaptation of the classic holiday film, which is sprinkled with seasonal favourites and Great American Songbook standards. “It’s going to be really wonderful in the venue,” Jorgensen said. “A lot of people are still unfamiliar with the Anvil Centre Theatre. Everyone who’s come to see one of our productions here has remarked on what a great venue it is, what a great neighbourhood it’s in, and how easy it is to get to.”

2. The Fugitives. The folk-rock outfit is one of a few local bands playing at Winter Celebrations. Others include Fionn, which features harmonizing folk-pop twins from White Rock; The Sojourners, a gospel trio; and Maple Leaf Singers. The latter describe themselves as “a show chorus of more than 50 performers.”

Accomplished guitarist Anna Pietrzak performs with tenor Thomas Lamont Dec 22 at 6:45 p.m. as part of this year’s Winter Celebrations at THE Anvil Centre.  PNG

3. Anna Pietrzak. The guitarist has received multiple scholarships, has performed all over the world, and released three albums. Other musicians performing at the Celebrations include tabla player Cassius Khan and guitarist/composer Itamar Erez.

4. Labyrinth. Other attractions of Winter Celebrations include a labyrinth, a comedy show called Festivus for the NewWest of Us, and the Solstice Pride Ball.

5. Children’s activities. These include dance, arts and crafts, storytelling, circus and juggling arts, art installations, and musical performances. Entertainers include RupLoops, a live looping performance using vocal percussion, Will’s Jams, and The Blues Berries. The Berries sing about topics such as the alphabet, recycling, and bullying.
