One person has died in a Burnaby house fire on Tuesday morning.
Deputy Chief Chris Bowcock with the Burnaby Fire Department said crews were managing a smaller building fire in another area of Burnaby when the call came in around 1 a.m. Tuesday for a heavy fire at a two-storey home at the corner of Dundas Street and Ranelagh Avenue, with one person trapped inside.
On arrival, crews were met with heavy flames and smoke showing from the top floor of the home.
Bowcock said crews initiated rescue operations “under heavy heat, fire and smoke” and were able to pull one person from the fire.
“You can imagine that requires a significant number of people and resources. So we went past extinguishment as a priority and focused on finding and locating the individuals in the building and then removing that individual,” said Bowcock.
“Once that was accomplished, we then conducted extinguishment operations.”
B.C. Emergency Health Services treated the individual at the scene but the person did not survive.
The home suffered extensive damage.
No further information has been released. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
