THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two other government agencies to prepare the country’s labor sector for future production requirements in the manufacturing industry in light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0).

In a statement on Monday, the DTI said the first MoU signed by DTI, the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda), formally included the latter two agencies in the expanded MoU between government agencies (i.e., Department of Science and Technology or DoST, National Economic and Development Authority or NEDA, Department of Education or DepEd, Commission on Higher Education or CHED, Department of Information and Communications Technology or DICT, and Department of Agriculture or DA) signed last year.

The DTI, DoLE and Tesda will be cooperating on the innovation initiatives agreement on human resource development, reskilling and upskilling of the workforce.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello 3rd, Tesda Secretary Isidro Lapeña and Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez signed the MoU.

The second MoU, on the other hand, is an agreement of cooperation between DTI and Siemens, which provides assistance to DTI in advancing Fourth Industrial Revolution initiatives in the country.

The DTI said both parties agreed to closely collaborate in creating a Fourth Industrial Revolution roadmap geared toward ushering the manufacturing industry and the Philippines toward Industry 4.0.

The MoU signatories were Raimund Klein of Siemens Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba for DTI.

“With these (MoU signings), we hope we can revitalize the manufacturing sector. This is the sector that can bring in more jobs for the Filipinos, helping achieve the vision of our President (Rodrigo Duterte) in having more Filipinos live more comfortable lives,” Lopez said.

According to the World Economic Forum, Industry 4.0 is described as the advent of “cyber-physical systems,” enmeshing digital technology with physical society and enterprises that result in entirely new capabilities for people and machines.
