MAJORITY of Filipinos are proud when the Philippines does well at international sports competitions, according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released on Thursday.

The poll from September 27 to 30 among 1,800 Filipino adults nationwide showed 95 percent of respondents (79 percent very proud and 17 percent somewhat proud) were proud when the country did well in international sports.

Only 3 percent said they were not proud of the country’s achievements in international sports.

“There are more Filipinos now who feel pride when the country does well in international sports than when the question was asked in 2008,” SWS said.

In 2008, there were 74 percent who were very proud and 19 percent somewhat proud, for a total of 93 percent who were proud of the country’s achievements in international sports.

“Those who feel very proud increased by five points, from 74 percent in 2008 to 79 percent in 2019,” the polling firm added.

The latest survey was released a day after the country’s successful hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEA) Games, which was dominated by the Philippines for the second time in the sporting event’s history.

More than 5,000 athletes from 11 participating nations took part in the SEA Games from November 30 to December 11 with the Philippines, the host, clinching the overall championship during the conclusion of the competitions on Wednesday.

The Philippine delegation claimed the top spot, the second time it did since 2005 and in the history of SEA Games.

The host country snagged 149 gold, 117 silver, and 121 bronze, or a total of 387 medals in the 30th edition of the regional sports competition.

The 149 gold medals were higher than the 112 recorded in 2005 when the Philippines also hosted the biennial regional multi-sport event.

Meanwhile, SWS said the percentages of those who were proud of the Philippines’ achievements in international sports were high and hardly vary in all areas and across socio-demographic groups.

Four in five in Metro Manila (84 percent) and Balance Luzon (81 percent) are very proud of the country’s achievements in sports, slightly higher than the 77 percent in Visayas and 72 percent in Mindanao.

Eighty-one percent of Filipino males are very proud of the country’s achievements in international sports, slightly higher than the 76 percent among the females.

By age group, pride in the country’s achievements in sports is higher among older adults than those 18-24.

Based on the survey, 68 percent of the youth aged 18-24 are very proud of the country’s achievements in sports.

By comparison, about four in five of the older adults aged 25 and above are very proud of the country’s achievements in sports – 78 percent among the 25-34, 80 percent among the 35-44, 85 percent among the 45-54, and 77 percent among the 55 and above.

The September survey, using face-to-face interviews, had sampling error margins of ±2.3 percent for national percentages, ±4 percent each for Balance Luzon and Mindanao, and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila and the Visayas.

SWS said data from the International Social Survey Program’s survey modules on national identity in 1995, 2003 and 2013 showed that the Philippines’ achievements in sports were “the top source of pride among Filipinos, along with the country’s history and achievements in arts and literature.”

In 1995, a total of 80 percent were proud (25 percent very proud and 56 percent somewhat proud) of the Philippines’ achievements in sports.

Pride in the country’s achievements in sports increased to 84 percent in 2003 (40 percent very proud and 45 percent somewhat proud) and reached the all-time high 86 percent in 2013 (54 percent very proud and 33 percent somewhat proud).

The percentages of those who are proud of the country’s history were 82 percent in 1995, 82 percent in 2003 and 84 percent in 2013.

Pride in the Philippines’ achievements in arts and literature were 73 percent in 1995, 78 percent in 2003 and 83 percent in 2013. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
