Fab 5: Holiday gifts for him

Whether he’s the type to say he doesn’t need anything (eye roll) or is so picky that your list of possible gifts is as long as it is untenable, buying a gift for a guy isn’t as easy as some might have you think.
If you’re lucky, it’ll be his new favourite thing; the next best thing is if he seems to be OK with it and you then witness him using, wearing or toting it for years to come.
A relegated-to-the-corner situation is obviously what we hope to avoid. Rebecca Tay presents five stylish gift ideas for guys — fingers crossed one of these becomes his new favourite thing.
If he’s into streetwear and loves his brands, chances are, he’ll have heard of Aimé Leon Dore, the label founded by Teddy Santis in 2014. Heavily inspired by New York, his collections riff on everything from ‘90s rap to pickup basketball games and are then given an upscale, grown-up, scrubbed-and-cleaned twist. We love this fisherman sweater for its laid-back design: layer over a hoodie or button all the way to the top for a cleaner look.

Let’s be honest, we should all be a little (actually, a lot) more eco conscious. But if you’re hunting for a gift for a particularly cognizant fella, consider a pair of sunglasses by new Montreal brand Happy Beluga. Made from wood, bamboo, recycled plastic and biodegradable wheat straw fibre, they’re eco-friendly and feature UV400 lenses, and the company donates $1 from each pair sold to the GREMM, a non-profit organization that focuses on research and education on marine mammals. This Leatherback’wood style is named for the ridges on a sea turtle’s shell, and comes in a bamboo case.

A pair of gloves is the perennial men’s gift: stylish, practical, and something that does often need to be replaced (there really must be a graveyard for all those single lost gloves out there). We love this Edward pair by Hestra Gloves, a Swedish company that’s been around since 1936. Made of soft leather with a high gloss, they’re lined in wool, and each pair is hand sewn, a process that takes about two hours.
Wallace Mercantile Shop, wallacemercantileshop.com | $175
If you’ve travelled at all this year, you’ve probably seen plenty of people rolling their nondescript-yet-pretty-recognizable Away suitcases through the airport. You’ve probably been served an Instagram ad for the company, too: they’re everywhere. The thing is, their products are well made, stylish, and practical (there are lots of inserts you can also get, to make packing even easier). What’s not to love?
Away, awaytravel.com | $375
We can’t say we love the idea of a guy who spends a lot of time in front of the mirror, but we can all appreciate a guy who has nice things in his bathroom: it shows attention to detail and is an indicator of taste (if nothing else). Enter Tradition, a brand of made-in-Germany hair care products with interesting illustrated labels and good product to boot. This Weizen Bier (wheat beer) shampoo strengthens the hair, adds sheen, and is full of vitamins and nutrients for his locks.
