Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said policemen should remember and emulate the selfless act of heroism showed by Police Master Sgt. Jason Magno who died after he used his body to shield others from a grenade explosion late November.

Andanar made the statement after President Duterte posthumously conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu, Rank of Kalasag to Magno when he visited his wake in Initao, Misamis Oriental sans fanfare early this week. Duterte was accompanied by Philippine National Police officer-in-charge Police Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa and Sen. Bong Go.

The President had earlier visited and conferred the Order of Lapu Lapu, Rank of Kampilan to Police Master Sgt. Alice Balido who was injured during the incident.

Andanar lauded the conferment of the awards to Magno and Balido, saying their colleagues in the police force should remember and emulate their heroism.

“Their selfless acts of heroism and bravery so they could protect the civilians went above and beyond the call of duty. It is something that is worth remembering and emulating by our other police officers,” Andanar said.

The former journo expressed that civilians should be inspired by the selfless act of the two cops to be heroes to those in need and in keeping the country safe.

“For other Filipinos, may their actions be a reminder that we can all be protectors and heroes to others in our own way,” Andanar said. “Guided by the courage and bravery displayed by both Magno and Balido, may we all be inspired to collectively promote safety and security in our country,” he added.

Gamboa thanked Duterte for uplifting the morale of policemen.

“In behalf of the family of Master Sgt. Magno and the whole of PNP, we thank you Mr. President and Sen. Go for your tireless support for our policemen and policewomen. Please be assured that we will return the favor by serving our people with courage, honesty and integrity just like what Master Sgt. Magno did,” Gamboa said.

Gamboa said Duterte and Go’s gesture “is a big morale booster for the men and women of the PNP who constantly put their lives on the line so that others may live.”

Magno’s bereaved family was also given a special financial assistance by the Office of the President.

Gamboa said Magno’s gallantry and dedication as a police officer was “a solid proof that the PNP is still filled with men and women who remain true to their oath as public servants.”

“Master Sgt. Magno did not just save a lot of people. He also saved the PNP from this relentless campaign to discredit our men and women in uniform. May he inspire others to have the same heart and the same dedication to serve our people,” Gamboa stressed.

The Order of Lapu Lapu, Rank of Kalasag is given to government officials and personnel who lost their lives as a direct result of their participation in an activity pursuant to a campaign or advocacy of the Presiden
