Treat Conrad Huey and Ruben Gonzales barged to the men’s doubles finals after beating Vietnamese Le Quoc Khanh and Ly Hoang Nam in the semifinals of the 30th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) tennis competition at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Huey and Gonzales’ easy 6-1, 6-3 win over the Vietnamese earned them a finals match against compatriots Jeson Patrombon and Francis Casey Alcantara.
“It’s a good semifinal match today. Ruben and I played really well from the start to the finish. They (Vietnam) raised their level from the beginning of the second set but it was great for us to keep our level high and we created some chances in the end and played well. We are excited to play in the gold medal match tomorrow,” Huey, 34, told The Manila Times.
Huey and Gonzales established a comfortable 3-0 lead but the Vietnamese fought valiantly in the second set. But Huey and Gonzales’ cohesive play nullified their rivals fightback.
“Second set was close until the end but we’re able to clinch the match.”
Gonzales commended Huey’s impressive play.
“He played in great level, helped carry the team. I played pretty well. We complement each other and I always learn a lot from him,” said Gonzales.
Patrombon and Alcantara, meanwhile, defeated Vietnamese rivals Daniel Cao Nguyen and Nguyen Van Phuong, 6-3, 6-1, in the semifinals.
The Philippines is already assured of a gold and a silver in the men’s doubles event.
