THE Philippines was ranked the lowest in reading comprehension and second lowest in science and mathematics among 79 countries, a global survey said.
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) tested around 600,000 15-year old students in 79 countries through the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).
PISA results showed that Philippines has an average reading score of 340, lowest among the countries surveyed. It is also below the OECD average of 487.
“Reading proficiency is essential for a wide variety of human activities – from following instructions in a manual; to finding out the who, what, when, where and why of an event; to communicating with others for a specific purpose or transaction,” the result said.
Philippines also ranked second lowest in science and mathematics where the country has an average of 357 and 353 respectively.
Meanwhile, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that they did not expect “spectacular” results as it was the country’s first time to participate in a global ranking system.
The cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zheijang in China topped all the categories followed by Singapore. JAN ARCILLA
