SEA Games: Philippines teams flex their might in softball opener
NEW CLARK CITY — Philippine softball made its gold intentions clear Monday when the Blu Boys and the Blu Girls scored lopsided victories over their respective opponents at The Villages here.
The Blu Girls, who have won all SEA Games golds ever contested, swept their double-header assignments in a show of might right on the first day of competition.
They first slammed down Singapore, 6-0, before stopping Malaysia, 8-1, in the afternoon.
The women’s team, nine-time champ in the biennial meet, scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings to dominate the match against Singapore.
“We have a strong team here but we need to do due diligence and make sure we perform according to what is expected of us,” said the Blu Girls team manager Randy Dizer.
After allowing Malaysia to score in the first inning, the Philippines blasted home four runs in the second before cruising to victory.
Right after, the Blu Boys scored an 11-0 blow-out over Thailand to also debut on bright note.
Bolstered by youngsters who finished second in the Asian Youth Championships two years ago, the Blu Boys had a field day bombing away five runs in the fourth frame and four in the fifth.
