Over 500 villages in Metro Manila prone to floods, landslides

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday said that more than 500 barangay (villages) in 14 cities in Metro Manila are vulnerable to floods and landslides.
MMDA General Manager Jose Arturo “Jojo” Garcia Jr., citing data from Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), said that 579 villages are prone to floods and landslides.

Of this number, 215 villages are in Manila; 121 in Pasay; 62 in Quezon City; 30 in Makati; 28 in Pasig; 21 in Las Piñas; 20 in Mandaluyong; 17 in Caloocan; 16 in Taguig; 15 in Parañaque; 14 in Marikina; 10 in Pateros; nine in Muntinlupa; and one from San Juan.
Garcia said that the agency is bracing for the impact of Typhoon Tisoy (international name Kammuri), which was expected to bring heavy rains in parts of Metro Manila.
“We already gave information to the LGUs. Pinapabayaan natin ang LGUs on what to do. Kung ano man ang desisyon nila at kailangan nila ng tulong, ang MMDA, MMDRRMC(Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council), naka-ready tayo (We already informed the LGUs. We let them decide what to do. If they need help, MMDA and MMDRRMC are here to help them),” he said. JAN ARCILLA
