The Quezon City government expressed alarm over the high number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the first seven months of the year.
Data from the City’s health department showed that 505 new HIV cases were recorded from January to July this year. Only 19 of these were females.
Dr. Rolando Cruz, head of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit and sexually transmitted infections, said 77 new HIV cases were tallied in July alone.
“The low knowledge to prevention of HIV and stigma and discrimination attached to HIV also contributed to the high number of fresh cases,” Cruz said.
Mayor Josefina Belmonte, in a bid to address the growing HIV cases, launched ZERO at 2030 campaign which aims to prevent the spread of the deadly virus through prevention, control and treatment.
“We are concerned by the continued incidence of new HIV cases in the city amid our ongoing efforts to combat it,” Belmonte said. Franz Embudo
