Vancouver’s only outdoor public skating rink opened Saturday at Robson Square.
B.C. Minister of Citizens’ Services Selina Robinson said the free skating rink is now officially open for the 11th season and will be open until Feb. 29.
The government says more than 120,000 people visit the rink each year.
The rink will host a 12 days of Christmas celebration, including live musical entertainment from Dec. 13 to Dec. 24. Rumba Calzada, a local Latin jazz and salsa band, will play on New Year’s Eve.
The government says all donations raised at the events will go to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The ice rink is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Entrance to the rink is free and skate rentals are $5 and include a helmet.
Hot chocolate and snacks are sold at the ice rink’s concession stand.
The Robson Square Ice Rink originally opened in 1982 but closed in 1991. It was later renovated and reopened in 2009 before the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.
