TYPHOON “Kammuri” slowed down slightly but maintained its strength as it approached the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday, the weather-state bureau said.
In its 11 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted the center of “Kammuri” at 1,220 kilometers east of Southern Luzon, still outside of the PAR.
Kammuri has maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph.
It is moving west-southwest at 15 kph and will be renamed “Tisoy,” the 20th Philippine tropical cyclone for 2019, once it enters the country.
Weather specialist Raymond Ordinario said maritime travel would be cancelled in the typhoon-affected areas.
The weather bureau said Kammuri would intensify further before it makes landfall.
Ordinario said that while Tisoy may develop into a super typhoon, that possibility was less likely to happen at the moment.
Tisoy is forecast to bring moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms starting Monday over the Bicol Region and Samar provinces, the weather expert said.
Pagasa said that most of the areas in Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Metro Manila will experience strong winds and heavy rains on Tuesday and Wednesday. FRANZ LEWIN EMBUDO
