Higher than acceptable levels of lead and mercury have been found in products purchased from a Surrey Ayurvedic clinic, causing at least one person to date to become sick.

A notice issued by Fraser Health on Tuesday advised clients of Dutta Health Centre Ayurvedic Clinic to throw away any Ayurvedic products they had purchased from the clinic, as some of the products were found to contain “higher than acceptable levels of heavy metals (including lead and mercury).”

Other products had not been licensed by Health Canada to be sold as natural health products.

“Products sold by the Dutta Clinic could pose serious health risks,” the notice read.

Authorities have issued a health hazard order to the clinic, located at 12888 – 80 Avenue, while Health Canada has issued a public advisory about the clinic.

To date, one individual has fallen ill from lead poisoning after consuming Ayurvedic products from the Dutta Clinic.

Fraser Health is advising people who have used products from the clinic to see a physician to discuss their concerns and products used.

Lead poisoning can show itself through anemia, headaches, irritability, slowed thinking constipation, stomach pain, miscarriages or stillbirth. Symptoms of mercury poisoning include mood swings, memory loss, and muscle weakness.

Anyone with questions can call Fraser Health’s Surrey health protection office at 604-930-5405 (local 765612) or visit www.fraserhealth.ca.
