Chicken, egg output up 8.5% in Q3

PHILIPPINE chicken and chicken egg production grew in the third quarter of the year, with increases seen in almost all the regions, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said.

The July-to-September “Chicken Situation Report” of the PSA said total chicken output during the period reached 465,150 metric tons (MT), an 8.5-percent increase from 428,770 MT in the third quarter of 2018.

Compared to their levels a year ago, 13 regions posted significant increases. The highest increment was reported in the Bicol region (Region 5) at 32 percent, growing to 14,630 MT from the previous 11,090 MT.

During the third quarter, Central Luzon (Region 3) the highest production of chicken at 164,440 MT, followed by Calabarzon (Region 4A or Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and Northern Mindanao (Region 10) with 87,000 MT and 38,100 MT, respectively.

“These three regions contributed 62.2 percent to the country’s total chicken production,” PSA said.

However, as of October 1, the total inventory of chicken was estimated at 192.80 million birds.

“The inventory of native/improved chicken dropped by 3.2 percent from 83.29 million birds in 2018 to 80.62 million birds in 2019. Broiler chicken inventory at 71.53 million birds also went down by 1.2 percent from its previous year’s level of 72.41 million birds. Layer chicken inventory was recorded at 40.65 million birds or 4.3 percent higher than the previous year’s record of 38.99 million birds,” PSA said.

Central Luzon and Calabarzon contributed 18.4 and 14.1 percent, respectively, to the total chicken inventory, it added.

The average farmgate price of broiler chicken in commercial farms dropped at P84.58 per kilogram (kg), or 3.1-percent down from P87.33/kg last year.

During the three-month period, the highest farmgate price was recorded in September at P91.38/kg, while the lowest was quoted in July at P76.65/kg.

Meanwhile, local chicken egg production in July to September totalled 145,54 MT, 8.8-percent higher from 133,720 MT in 2018.

PSA said increases in chicken egg production were seen in 14 regions with the highest increment recorded in Central Luzon at 15.7 percent to 30,670 MT.

The three highest chicken egg-producing regions were Calabarzon, Central Luzon and Central Visayas (Region 7), it added.

Adult female inventory of native/improved chicken, however, continued to decline by 3.2 percent to 22.09 million birds from 22.82 million birds.

On the other hand, laying flock inventory of foreign strain layers grew by 6.3 percent to 33.81 million birds compared to last year’s 31.80 million birds.

PSA said the average farmgate price of chicken egg in commercial farms was quoted at P5.16 per piece, or a 16.4-percent increase from the P4.43 per piece a year ago.

During the period, the highest farmgate price was recorded in September at P5.46 per piece, while the lowest was noted in July at P4.85 per piece.
