An incident on the Stawamus Chief ended shortly after noon Tuesday when Mounties apprehended a man believed to be having a mental-health crisis.
According to Squamish RCMP, a woman hiking along the route Tuesday morning alerted police to a man on the trail who was walking on the edge of a cliff and was believed to have weapons on him.
Mounties responded immediately, sending a heavy police presence up the mountain to locate the man, and clearing the area with the help of the Lower Mainland emergency response team in the meantime.
The man was apprehended without incident by 12:30 p.m., police said, and by 1:15 p.m. Squamish RCMP announced that the risk to public safety had ended and people could return to the popular hiking destination.
No one was injured during the operation.
“We would like to thank the public and the media for avoiding the area while our teams ensured the safety of all those on the Stawamus Chief,” said Sgt. Sascha Banks. “Our geographic area can be extremely technical and challenging for a police response.”
