THE Philippines will be meeting Thailand next week in South Korea to discuss concerns over the dispute on the World Trade Organization (WTO) ruling. “We’re meeting them (Thailand) next week [in] Korea. We’ll have a bilateral meeting with them,” Trade Secretary Ramon
Lopez told The Manila Times on the sidelines of event in Parañaque City on Monday night.
Lopez recently said that the country may restrict all vehicle imports from Thailand as a retaliatory measure if it will not abide by the WTO ruling on valuation for cigarette shipments. In July, WTO ruled in favor of the Philippines’ claim that Thailand violated the policies on valuation for cigarette shipments through under-declaration. WTO mandates that customs value of imported goods be measured at transaction value or the “price actually paid or payable for the goods when sold for export to the country of importation.”
Thailand’s action, the trade department said, is seen to be harming Filipino tobacco farmers, private sectors of both countries, export interests and bilateral relations.
