Top Rank Promotion boss Bob Arum said International Boxing Federation super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas will get the same amount of prize money in his eighth title defense against Chilean Miguel Gonzalez on December 7 at the Auditorio GNP Seguros in Puebla, Mexico.
The 30-year-old Gonzalez holds a 31-2 record with eight knockouts.
“The same purse? Yes of course. Well, I’m not going to tell you the number, but believe me, all I can tell you without any question is he is getting the same purse that would have gotten into the fight that was canceled,” Arum told The Manila Times via overseas call.
The 27-year-old Panabo, Davao del Norte boxer’s bout against Javier Rodriguez in Carson, California on November 2 was canceled because of the Mexican’s visa and medical requirement issues.
A reliable source said Ancajas (31-1-2 win-loss-draw record with 21 knockouts) was reportedly guaranteed a $175,000.00 (P9,061,500 million) purse for the Rodriguez fight but he came home empty handed because of the no fight, no pay policy.
Arum said the Ancajas-Gonzalez bout will be a prelude to the main event between Mexican World Boxing Organization super bantamweight champion Emanuel Navarrete and compatriot Francisco Horta.
“Because a lot of the fighters in his weight category are Mexican champions — and this will give him a big exposure in the Mexican market. My matchmaker told me that it is going to be a very pleasant fight,” Arum explained.
Ancajas and his trainer and manager Joven Jimenez decided to stay and continue his training in California after the canceled Rodriguez fight.
“He understood what happened last time that he supposed to fight that the opponent didn’t do what he had to do to get the visa in time and couldn’t get his medicals. He wanted the fight, so this is the best available date that we had,” added Arum.
