OPERATIVES of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) busted an all Japanese crime group involved in the telecommunications scam in an operation in Makati City.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente disclosed on Friday that 36 Japanese, including the two leaders of the group, were arrested.
Morentes said the operation was conducted following an official communication from the Japanese government that a certain Nobuki Oshita, 20 and Yusuke Kiya, 33 have standing arrest warrants for theft in Japan, prompting him immediately issue a mission order for their arrest.
However, Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) head Bobby Raquepo said that the operation also yielded the arrest of 34 other Japanese nationals who were allegedly engaged in voice phishing operations.
“Upon verification with the Japanese police, it was found out that all 36 are members of an organized crime group involved in telecom fraud and extortion,” Raquepo said.
The group has reportedly victimized at least 1,393 Japanese, with an estimated cost of damage amounting to 2 billion yen.WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
