Eleni Skalbania opened The Wedgewood 35 years ago, and now, daughter Elpie Marinakis, co-owner and managing director, runs it with the flair and grace of her late mother.
“Bacchus is one of the city’s most enduring restaurants. The room has old-world charm with contemporary touches making it an escape from the everyday,” she says.
To celebrate its 35th year, they tour memory lane with a three-course anniversary tasting menu ($79) with some classic dishes alongside the new fall menu. The anniversary menu is available for the month of November. The classics are the wedge salad, duck a l’orange two ways, and inverted lemon tart.
Chef Montgomery Lau’s fall dishes include lobster and scallop mousseline terrine, slow-roasted half rack of lamb, and squash risotto with mascarpone.
Tacofino addresses stigmas around gender, mental health and substance use issues at Shift Change, at Tacofino Ocho on Nov. 25 at 6 p.m. A panel discussion features Shoel Davidson (Gringo Gastown, Dixie’s BBQ), Kristin Bower (workplace consultant), Makenzie Chilton (psychologist, career coach), Heat Laliberte (One Arrow Meats, youth activist in Downtown East Side).
As well, Mind The Bar, a resource centre for hospitality workers dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, workplace harassment, and suicide thoughts will launch a free 24/7 employee assistance program to members.
Tickets to Shift Change are $30 and include Tacofino canapes, cocktails and zero-proof beverages, music, art raffle for trip for two to Tofino. Tickets at eventbrite.com/e/shift-change-tickets-78130655895. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Mind The Bar.
