Freshman cadet drowns in PMA pool

A freshman cadet drowned at the Philippine Military Academy’s (PMA) swimming pool on Friday, a spokesman said.
Capt. Cheryl Tindog identified the victim as Cdt. 4th Class Mario Telan Jr. of the PMA’s Cadet Corps Alpha Company.
Telan attended his swimming class from 11 a.m. to 12 noon but was unable to attend his next classes, Tindog said in a statement o Friday night.
After a search at the PMA swimming pool, Tindog said Telan was found at the 15-foot deep end of the pool. He was rushed to the Fort del Pilar hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
A “thorough investigation” is also being conducted into the incident in coordination with the Baguio City Police.
“All needed actions and protocols are being undertaken to deal with any infraction and/or irregularity,” Tindog said.
The PMA suspended all swimming classes “until such time that the incident has been properly addressed.”
“PMA deeply grieves for this unfortunate loss of one of our sons. All necessary assistance will be extended to the bereaved family and loved ones of Cdt [4th Class] Telan,” Tindog said. DEMPSEY REYES
