A federal election recount for Port-Moody Coquitlam has been terminated.
New Democrat candidate Bonita Zarrillo was granted a recount last week in the riding after losing to Conservative Nelly Shin by 153 votes on the Oct. 21 election night. Recounts only happen when the votes for the winner and the runner-up are separated by 0.1 per cent of the total.
Elections Canada announced Thursday that the recount was terminated at Zarrillo’s request.
Zarrillo made the announcement on her Facebook page but provided no reason why she cancelled the recount.
“I will share more details … and some insights into the experience … soon,” said Zarrillo, who noted in her application for a judicial recount that there were 516 rejected ballots in the electoral district, an unusually high number.
Postmedia has reached out to Zarillo for comment.
Shin, who moved to Coquitlam before the election after being shuffled out of her riding in Richmond Hill, Ont., finished with 16,855 votes to Zarrillo’s 16,702. Liberal candidate Sara Badiei received 15,595 votes.
With the victory, Shin became the first Korean-Canadian elected to the House of Commons.
