Fortnite, the mega-popular online survival game, has partnered with the Royal Canadian Legion to create Remembrance Island, a game mode that gives young players an opportunity to learn about Canada’s military history.
Unlike the other custom modes in the game, no battles will take place on Remembrance Island which will feature recreations of First World War trenches, D-Day beaches, a Canadian military cemetery, the well-known Vimy Ridge memorial cenotaph along with other historic sites and memorials.
“It’s our hope that young Canadians will take a few moments to visit this unique environment and learn about the men and women who gave their lives to protect our freedom,” Freeman D. Chute, senior program officer at the Royal Canadian Legion, said in a statement. “As time goes on, we have to find new ways to reach young people and tell the story of Canadian veterans. This is a fantastic example of how to do just that.”
The island can be accessed in the game’s creative mode using the island code 5053-3302-4847.

The objective for gamers is to discover the 30 museum-like information plaques and follow the poppies to reach a memorial cenotaph at a central point of the island.
In addition to traditional 11 a.m. Remembrance Day ceremonies, Fortnite players are encouraged to gather at the cenotaph at 11 p.m. on Nov. 11 to have their own moment of silence and salute, then share images or streams using the hashtag #SaluteThePoppy.
The island was conceived by Canadian agency Wunderman Thompson and brought to life, free of charge, by a Fortnite creative builder known as JXDVN.
