A federal election recount for Port-Moody Coquitlam begins today in Pitt Meadows.
The recount will run for three or four days, and then Elections Canada will release the final tally. There is no interim reporting on the count.
New Democrat candidate Bonita Zarillo was granted a recount last week in the riding after narrowly losing to Conservative Nelly Shin by 153 votes. Recounts only happen when the votes between the winner and the runner-up are separated by 0.1 per cent of the total.
On election night Oct. 21, Zarillo trailed Shin by more than 300 votes but after the official count was complete, she was just 153 votes behind. The application for the judicial recount says there were 516 rejected ballots in the electoral district, an usually high number.
Zarillo confirmed a judge in New Westminster ordered the recount Tuesday.
