If you’re in Gastown this weekend, don’t be alarmed if you see a mock dead body or three.
No, you’re not caught in a time warp — Halloween is indeed over, and the dead no longer walk the earth. But an upcoming Vancouver film shoot will be attempting to fake it.
According to a Reddit thread created by the official City of Vancouver account, filming will be taking place at Cambie and Cordova Street, initiating road closures in the heart of Gastown on Nov. 2-3.
This shoot “involves highly visible graphic content including mock dead bodies, a mock dead police horse, trash and debris,” according to the city.
So don’t be fooled, and don’t cry for the horse. It’s a fake horse.
This content comes to Vancouver’s streets straight from the mind of Stephen King, whose 1978 horror novel The Stand serves as the basis for an upcoming miniseries on CBS All Access.
The Stand was previously adapted as a miniseries for ABC in 1994, and is considered one of the better productions based on King’s work. Several others, including the 1990 miniseries version of It, have used Vancouver as a backdrop.
This marks the second straight weekend that Vancouver has been transformed into a post-apocalyptic wasteland for the production. The City of Vancouver warned residents in a tweet last week not to be alarmed when they saw similarly grisly images at the 400 block of Seymour Street.
Today & tomorrow there will be filming taking place in Downtown (400 block of Seymour St) which involves highly visible graphic content including dead bodies, trash & debris, shouting of coarse language & gunfire. Please do not be alarmed if you're in the area. #CityofVancouver
It was still quite alarming, even with the advanced notice.
But Vancouverites are probably used to scenes like this by now. This happens in Hollywood North. In fact, several other King adaptations, including the 1990 miniseries version of It, have used Vancouver as a backdrop. And horror programs like The X-Files famously used Vancouver’s misty, rain-soaked streets to set an effective mood for their monster-of-the-week production.
This production is being filmed under the working title Radio Nowhere and will star Alexander Skarsgard, James Marsden, Whoopi Goldberg, Amber Heard, Greg Kinnear and shock rocker Marilyn Manson. Manson and fellow musician Shooter Jennings, son of Waylon, also teamed up for a cover of The End by The Doors that will be used in the miniseries.
The Stand tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world — left in ruins by a man-made influenza virus that kills most people — in which survivors group up and fight among each other.
Traffic impacts for this weekend include:
• Full road closure of Cordova St from Richards St to Abbott St
• Full road closure of Cambie St from Pender St to Water St
• Full road closure of Homer St from W Hastings St to W Cordova St
• Intermittent closure of W Hastings St from Homer St to Abbott St
Filming for The Stand is expected to wrap in March.
