A B.C. high school teacher who had sex with a former student the summer after she graduated has been fired.
According to a disciplinary decision that was published online Tuesday, the teacher “entered into an inappropriate, intimate and sexual relationship” with the 18-year-old student in early August, just six weeks after she completed high school.
The names of the teacher and the student have been withheld, as well as any other identifying information including the district where the misconduct occurred, to protect the student.
The teacher and student had known each other since the student was in Grade 9, according to the decision. The two regularly spent time together, including alone at the school, despite the teacher being aware that the student had a crush on him.
The relationship first crossed the line during the teenager’s junior year, the decision said.. When the student was in Grade 11, the teacher “had a physical contact with the student which was of a sexually suggestive nature.”
And in early August, after the student had graduated, she contacted the teacher and they met a few times in August. The teacher told the student that he loved her and “initiated sexual activity.”
His teaching certificate has been cancelled, and he is barred from applying for another certificate to work at either public or private schools for at least 10 years.
