Some people suit up in spandex and padded trousers for a casual 100-mile bike ride every other Saturday. Others just want to ride down the beach with their friends and come out on the other side without having broken a sweat. The Townie Go! 7D is for the latter group, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Let’s dive in.
Townie as a brand was kicked off under the Electra brand based on the simple premise that there were a ton of people out there in search of bikes that were comfortable to ride while also allowing them to put their feet down flat when it was time for a break. Or a slurpee. Or both. It’s a casual brand that oozes comfort, casual riding, and fun.
As wave after wave of electric bikes crashed on the shores of bikeville, the Townies did not bat an eye. Townies live in the land of the flat, where sand and salty air are plentiful and breaking a sweat only happens when you want it to, they thought. It was this realization, this very one, that caused the dots to be connected, and ultimately, caused a new generation of Townie to be born. The age of electrification was coming to Townie and boy, was it going to be good.
The Townie Go! 7D is a Townie through and through. Its beach cruiser frame comes in a traditional or step-through design to suit any lifestyle. It brings the same flat-footed designs Townie is known for into the age of electrification, but taps into a new generation of technology to make life even easier, if you can imagine that.
These aren’t your college student’s electric bikes either. Screens with numbers, metrics, ranges, and speeds conjure images of work, so Townie tossed those, substituting a simple LED light display that only displays two things: the battery charge on a scale of 1 to 5, and pedal assist mode with 3 simple levels. It is beautiful in its simplicity and yet glamorous how Townie took the concept of electric bikes and made it their own. People who buy beach cruisers just want to cruise. After all, it’s right there in the name.
They call the system the Hydrive electric assist system, but you don’t really care about that. What you do care about is that the 250-watt motor and 309 Wh battery make riding your cruiser that much easier. It flattens out hills, even sprinkling sand along the path to make you feel at home every step of the way. Ok, maybe not sand, but you see what I’m saying. The Townie Go! 7D takes everything Townie stands for and makes it better.
The seamless integration of the electric motor and the battery enable the Go! 7D to provide boost for up to 50 miles | 80 km of cruising. The battery has been tucked underneath the integrated rear frame, which brings a nice little touch of utility to the Go! 7D if you’re up for it. If not, just slap a cupholder on the handlebars and you’re good to go.
It features all the usual Townie bits and bobs customers have come to know and love, starting with a 6065-T6 aluminum frame that keeps the bike strong enough without going full blown road tank. Oversized 26” × 2.35” balloon tires soften the load while a Shimano 7-speed kit in the rear let you decide just how chill your ride will be.
The quality of Townie goes without saying. You don’t want to spend Saturdays getting greasy working on the bike, so the company just built it the way it should be built so when you’re ready, it’s ready. In all seriousness, they make great bikes that are all the rage here in Southern California for the reasons not-so-subtly woven into the poetry above. We put a few hundred miles on the Townie Go! 7D and it not only fits right into the brand, it takes it to the next level in many ways.
