Twenty-four suites of an apartment building in the Guildford neighbourhood of  Surrey were evacuated Halloween night after a fire broke out.

Surrey assistant fire chief David Burns said firefighters were called out to the three-story apartment building in the 10600-block of 150th Street at around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

He said the fire was contained to a suite on the third floor but there was damage to a neighbouring unit and water and smoke damage to other units.

Burns said 24 suites had to be evacuated, while 24 suites in another part of the building remained occupied.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire and where it started. Burns could not confirm reports that the fire may have been sparked by Halloween night fireworks that hit a balcony.

He said there were people using fireworks nearby, but investigators have no evidence yet that they had anything to do with the fire. He said more information should be known later Friday or Saturday.

The two occupants of the suite that was on fire went to hospital to be checked out and are expected to be OK.

There were no other reported injuries.

It is not known at this time when the displaced residents will be allowed to return to their suites.
