Another strong quake measuring 6.5-magnitude on the Richter scale rattled several areas in Mindanao Thursday morning.

The strong quake damaged Eva’s Hotel, one of the best hotels in Kidapawan City.

The hotel located along the national highway is no longer fit for occupancy, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CDRRM).

Reports from the City LGU’s command post said at least seven people, including the hotel owner’s son, survived the fall.

They were already in the hotel’s first floor holding office when the quake happened.

The hotel, along with several establishments in the city has already been cordoned off since October 29.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the tremor at around 9:11 a.m., which originated 28 kilometers northeast of Tulunan, Cotabato. It was registered two days after a 6.6-magnitude quake also hit the region last Tuesday.

Thursday’s temblor occurred at a shallow depth of 6 kilometers thus the strong shaking.

The 6.5-magnitude earthquake was felt at Intensity VII as a “destructive” tremor in Tulunan, Cotabato; Kidapawan City; and Sta. Cruz, Matanao, Bansalan and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur.

It was felt as a “very strong” tremor at Intensity VI in Tampakan, South Cotabato.

General Santos City, Tupi, South Cotabato; and Isulan, Sultan Kudarat felt the earhquake as a “strong” tremblor at Intensity V.

Intensity IV or “moderately strong” tremor was felt in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat.

Phivolcs’ instruments also measured the quake at Intensity V in Malungon, Sarangani; Intensity IV in Kiamba and Alabel in Sarangani province, and Koronadal City; and Intensity III in Gingoog City and Cagayan De Oro City.

Phivolcs continues to remind the public of possible tremors in the next several days or weeks.

The earthquake is still “part of a sequence of events from interrelated faults in the region.”

Phivolcs pointed out that Central Mindanao (SOCCSKSARGEN), which includes Cotabato, is one of the seismically active regions in the country because of the presence of several active faults in the area.
