It’s About More Than The Tesla [TSLA] Short Burn

The LA Times has published an article talking about how Elon Musk kept his promise regarding the Tesla short burn of the century and I just wanted to remind people that it’s more than just burning shorts. Of course, we are speaking in metaphors here, and not literally setting people or clothing on fire. A “short burn” is practically a technical term in the investment world.

Oh and uh short burn of the century comin soon. Flamethrowers should arrive just in time.

For those who may not quite understand (like people in my immediate circle of friends), short sellers are people who bet against a stock. They expect a stock price to go down, and put money on the table to benefit from that if it happens. Sometimes these bets bring in millions for the shorts. And other times, not so much.

But Tesla fans are not upset simply that some people (many people) short sell the stock. It’s about the lengths that some of the short sellers will go to make their money. They harass people on Twitter, get in groups and mass block anyone who supports Tesla, spread lies linked with half-truths to make those lies convincing about popular people in the Tesla community — all of this seemingly just to manipulate the Tesla share price.

If a short places a bet that the Tesla share price will be lower than X dollars by a certain date and that price is higher, they lose — and perhaps lost big, depending on how much money they put on the line. This is why they are so dependent on negative media headlines about Tesla, and not only Tesla. Some of these short sellers target Elon Musk, his family, SpaceX, and popular Tesla fans. They have made up insane lies about Elon and his girlfriend. Their bet against Tesla has turned into an obsession with Elon Musk himself. Weird.

This is why so many Tesla supporters celebrate the short burn. It’s a celebration of those being bullied and harassed actually having a victory over those who bully and attack them.

Stepping back a mile to two, the battle of the shorts and the bulls (people who support Tesla) is just a small-scale version of the war that Tesla itself is fighting against many corporations that want to destroy this planet.

There is nothing we can do to change their minds. The only thing we, as Tesla supporters, can do is remind each other of the bigger picture. It’s not about the shorts, and certainly not about individual short sellers (some of whom may genuinely believe everything they say about the company and Elon Musk). It’s not about the share price — unless you have all of your life savings invested in the stock, in which case I guess it is about that for you. The bigger picture is much bigger. Let me paint it for you.

Luthi, D., et al.. 2008; Etheridge, D.M., et al. 2010; Vostok ice core data/J.R. Petit et al.; NOAA Mauna Loa CO2 record.

Yes, the Earth’s climate has changed many times throughout history, but this time it is the result of our activity on the planet since the mid 20th century. Earth-orbiting satellites have enabled scientists to see and present the big picture: a body of data collected over many years shows that our planet is communicating with us. She is telling us, the people of Earth, but we aren’t listening.

Instead, we, the people of Earth, are squabbling over money, oil, greed, and power. We are creating wars so that we can sell weapons to the very people we fight with. We are making money off of killing ourselves and calling it success. We reward our own people a false sense of glory as they hold the dead bodies of their loved ones in their arms. We point to each other and say that our religion, our politics, our skin color is better. We enslave each other, and throughout all of this, we are killing our planet and ourselves.

To those who have hatred for Elon Musk and anyone else, why can’t you wake up? You chant the words “fraud” over and over like it’s a mantra, and hatred eats at your very soul. This hatred will consume you to the point that you will lose everything, and in the end, none of it even matters. Every tweet you send to Elon and his followers, every threat you make against us will fade in the light of the burning flames of the destruction that you contributed to. It’s not about Elon Musk, it’s about how you use your time and energy.

No one will care about money when there’s no oxygen, no food, and only a barren planet left. It’s not about you, short sellers.

Tesla has one common goal that it is meeting despite the odds, the critics, and the stock price fluctuations. Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. It’s not about cars. It’s not about the stock. It’s not about the short burn. It’s not about racing. It’s not about screaming at someone on Twitter because they disagree with your outlook on Tesla. It’s about energy and our use of it. Perhaps you can let Prince EA explain it better:

In his video, Man vs. Earth, Prince EA makes a comparison of the Earth’s entire lifespan as a day, and compares our own in that context as three seconds. In those three seconds, what have we done? We have had many successes, but at what cost? We call ourselves wise, but unlike a wise person, we don’t listen. We refuse to see what’s right in front of us. We refuse to see our own part in this maddening play. We take credit for our successes but won’t own up to the fact that we as a collective whole are killing this planet.

“In an existence shorter than a Vine video, we turned the circle of life into our own conveyor belt. Somebody, anybody, help! We were given so much — the planet in this solar system with life. We are one in a million. No, actually, scientifically, we are one in a billion-trillion-trillion. That’s a 1 followed by 33 zeros. 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.” –-Prince EA.

We can not call ourselves wise if we continually neglect and reject the home we have now. Wisdom listens while you speak, yet we covered our ears to mother nature’s screams as she begged us to stop killing her. And before you say, “I am only one person, what can I do?” let me remind you, as Prince EA did in the video, that something as small as the wings of a butterfly can cause a typhoon on the other side of the planet.

We are all here for a reason. Everyone has a purpose. We all matter and we all make an impact on the lives of millions — many who we may not even meet or be aware we are impacting. Every moment your heart continues to beat is a gift, but not for you. It’s your gift to the world, should you choose to pass that gift along. Every single second that you are alive, you have an opportunity to do good in this world. You have a chance to save it from yourself. Every action and inaction matters. You matter.

It’s not about the short burn. It’s about tomorrow. It’s about the 4th second and whether or not we will get there. Tesla is one corporation that is trying to get us there.
